I read that Joan looked up to Swanson. Also, many parallels between the two ladies in their lives and careers.
If you've only seen GS in Sunset Boulevard, and want to see some of her other performances, some of her films that I liked.
Stage Struck
Manhandled
Both of them are silents, romantic comedies. I enjoyed these more than her DeMille melodramas. Of course, there's also Sadie Thompson, which JC did as Rain.
Among her talkies, The Trespasser is the one I've liked best thus far.
Have me finished Indiscreet, but it looks good.

I have now watched Indiscreet, 1931. I did not enjoy it as much as her earlier talkie, to be honest. But, it is still a good movie. The copy on YouTube seems to particularly suffer from the poor audio that plagued early talkies. Also, it seems the movie has been chopped so parts are missing. That said, GS looks stunning, including a mildly naughty shower scene. She even sings and I think does so very well.
There is a strong supporting cast. Ben Lyon, Monroe Owsley - who starred with JC in This Modern Age (also 1931) - is, not surprisingly, a cad; a young Arthur Lake - later of Blondie fame; Henry Kolker - he's smarmy Marcus Morton in 1925's Sally, Irene and Mary, and - best of all - Maude Eburne, a great character actress, as GS's Aunt Kate.

If you go on YouTube, you’ll see Gloria Swanson on the Carol Brunette show. She has her signature red carnation and sings and dances the tango. Her figure and complexion is amazing. She’s ageless.

Have seen that! I'm guessing she's early 70s there and GS still looks like she's still in great shape. The bit with Lloyd Wagner - I think that's his name - is funny. I think she could have been a comedienne par excellence if she so desired, especially in talkies. Screwball comedies and the like being big in the 30s.

In her 1980 bio, Swanson says that she did not know Joan well, but that she was aware of Joan's fan-worship: "I was amazed when Eddie Goulding told me that I was Joan Crawford's idol, the woman she wanted to be like. I could not quite imagine a person feeling that way about another person."

In her 1980 bio, Swanson says that she did not know Joan well, but that she was aware of Joan's fan-worship: "I was amazed when Eddie Goulding told me that I was Joan Crawford's idol, the woman she wanted to be like. I could not quite imagine a person feeling that way about another person." I read that! And thought it an odd thing to write in one's autobiography. If anyone knew what JC went through in the 30s, it would be GS, who went through the same thing about a decade earlier. Swanson's upbringing was not near as hard scrabble as Joan's early life in TX and OK, but they both struggled to make good in show business in a similar fashion, both reached the pinnacle of movie stardom, and both struggled to stay relevant in a male-dominated business that favored young starlets over aging actresses. The biggest diff was that GS had interests outside of film and JC didn't, at least until her PepsiCo days. I wonder if JC's motivation to do Rain was in any way related to her idolizing Swanson, who of course played the same role at the end of the Silent Era in Sadie Thompson?!?
