I watched Flamingo Road last night on TCM. This movie was made in 1949. At that time Joan was single. She had divorced Phillip Terry in 1946. Christina was 10 and Christopher was 6. They may have been in Chadwick boarding school or close to going around this time. The twins, Cathy and Cindy were 2 years old. Joan, was 41. Joan had to work and she took on the role of Lane Bellamy in Flamingo Road. This was her last bonafide hit film for Warner Brothers. The screenplay by Robert Wilder was based on a 1946 play written by Wilder and his wife, Sally, which was based on Robert Wilder's 1942 novel of the same name. Originally intended as a vehicle for Ann Sheridan, who turned down role played by Joan Crawford. Lane Bellamy falls for Zachary Scott Who also happened to star with her in Mildred Pierce. It was fun to see them together again. Virginia Huston would appear with Joan Crawford again as her secretary, Ann, in Sudden Fear (1952). Joan worked many times in different movies with the same actors and actresses in different roles. My favorite pair up is Clark Gable and Joan Crawford working together. You know I don’t give away the plot of the movie, but Joan does get to slap someone in Flamingo Road. It’s a good deserving slap too. When I watched this movie I saw how Joan filled every word with the emotions and facial expressions and body movements that they deserve. You can tell she does her homework on the characters she plays. It’s an attribute of her ever so successful career. Even when it’s not my favorite Joan movie, Joan is always at her best. I love her.
