lantern.mediahist.org/catalog/naeb-b112-f01-23_0000To quote their web site..."Lantern is the search platform for the collections of the Media History Digital Library, an open access initiative led by Eric Hoyt and the Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research. The Media History Digital Library (MHDL) digitizes collections of classic media periodicals that belong in the public domain for full public access." You can search just like any other web site, and perhaps most usefully, you can limit the hits to a certain range of years. So, if you want to search a Joan flick like "The Taxi Dancer" you can search that string and then limit it from 1926 - 1928. I have found going +/- 1 year on the film release year is a good strategy. Below are some representative hits from the above search. The actual web page has them in larger, higher res format, plus the capabilities to look @ the issue from which the page was extracted. I've been using this site to get an idea of what the mags were saying about Joan when she was a promising It girl on the rise. Interesting to see the Queen before she was a Hollywood legend.

I just love this picture of Joan. She looks so young, joyful and beautiful. It is from a spring 1927 issue of Picture Play magazine. This is a little before the time Joan and Mr. Chaney made The Unknown. You may also recognize the smiling face in the publicity photo right below. It's Joan's BFF - Billie Haines.
