Using the Lantern website that I linked in another recent thread, I did a search of fan/trade magazines for contemporary reviews of Joan's first starring role, The Taxi Dancer (Feb. '27). I was motivated by re-watching part of the TCM documentary on Joan - from 2002 IIRC - and their implication (or my interpretation) that the film was not as successful as hoped, and so MGM put Joan back in supporting roles albeit to their top male actors - Gilbert, Novarro, Haines, etc. before her break-out performance in Our Dancing Daughters (Sept. '28)
On the surface that does not seem to be so, since her next film - The Understanding Heart (May '27; another "lost" film although the LOC says there is a copy in some archives. Ugh!!) - was another starring role for JC.
