Joan Crawford looks Amazing in this photo. I just watched “This Modern Age.” Yes, she did go blonde for this film. According to a biography, (and Wikipedia), she "wore her hair that color because the actress who was originally to play the part of the mother, Marjorie Rambeau was a blonde. When Rambeau became ill, the part was recast with a brunette actress, Pauline Frederick, whom Joan greatly admired. Joan's scenes had already been shot, and the difference in hair color was not reason enough to reshoot them. The fact that in this movie Joan shows up at her estranged Mother’s (boyfriend’s) home and is only 19 years old seems a little bit of a stretch. She looks older and acts older than 19. Also, in 1931 times were financially tough. The fact that no one in this movie really talks about the depression or even having to work is hard to believe. The young crowd would just drink and party the nights away. This movie tries to make the average person back then that can afford a movie ticket to forget the problems of the day and be swept away from it all. They probably needed something optimistic and lighthearted. According to MGM records the film earned $708,000 in the US and Canada and $183,000 elsewhere resulting in a profit of $218,000. I’m glad that I watched this movie. I think Joan did the best with the part they stared her in, but I wish the movie itself was better. Joan’s own quote about this movie is, “Just forget it.” I keep trying to figure out what I would have changed to love it more. Let me know your thoughts.
