Has to be Gable, right? They were so similar.. Why isn’t Barbara Stanwyck on the list? I also remember reading she had a tumultuous relationship with Glenn Ford, notorious lady’s man.. P.S. I love that story of her driving drunk to a director’s house to yell about Marilyn after she died

It’s Al Steele for me, sentimental romantic I am. He seemed to me to be so totally dedicated to Miss Crawford and gave the most stability she’d ever had from a relationship.

I love that story of her driving drunk to a director’s house to yell about Marilyn after she died I just now voted and picked Al Steele. Not a "sexy" choice (!), but I don't think the sexy Joan-n-Clark would've lasted very long. One reason: Joan was kind of (!) a control freak, and I don't think Clark would've/could've put up with that too long on a day-to-day basis... Big Al, on the other hand, I think was the best match 'cause he, unlike fellow actors, was secure in his position---and as current President of Pepsi, he was MORE powerful than Joan was at the time, since her star was slightly on the down-swing as she aged. So with Steele, she had the powerful man she could look up to a bit AND be a help-meet to and feel useful; and then simultaneously I'm sure Al was completely worshipful of her glamorous self---a decade or so earlier, she would have been WAY out of his league! I thought about adding Stanwyck to the list, but finally limited the women to those who had actually TOLD someone they'd slept with Joan: MM her psychiatrist, and Martha Raye in her published bio. (Aside from Stanwyck, I also think Dietrich is a good candidate for "probably" slept with.) Re Glenn Ford: I love this quote about the girdle, from the "Glenn Ford: A Life in Film" bio: I also thought about adding co-stars like Ford and John Ireland, et al, to the list, but that list would have probably gone on a bit too long! (Jackie Cooper I added just to be quirky.) Oh, and here's the quote (from "Divine Feud") about Joan's going to director George Cukor's house on the evening of Monroe's death. When Cukor asked why she was so upset, since she'd never liked Monroe, Joan answered:

Clark Gable was “The King.” Joans words from NYC town hall speech. I agree that she both loved him most AND had the best sexual relationship with him. But, personally, I think it was probably the most mature choice that both of them made to call it quits when LB Mayer told them to. Mayer could have ruined their careers, and thus their lives...They were both hard-headed realists and made the smart career decision. (Had they made the "Romeo and Juliet" decision, do you think they would've been happy after a couple of years?)

Steele was the one that I also just now voted for. See my above post for reasons (like you, I think he was strong, stable, and dedicated to her).

Well, let me put it this way: The one true love that never died, the one devotion that never failed Our Miss C was the love of her fans. So, metaphorically speaking, the only hook-up/partner/lover/soul-mate always faithful and always true to her was her "Fans". Each of them loved her dearly and was loved back unconditionally. That what I call a match made in heaven.

Here's a good quote from George Cukor's eulogy for Joan, given in May 1977: Read the full Cukor tribute: www.joancrawfordbest.com/cukortribute.htm

I love that story of her driving drunk to a director’s house to yell about Marilyn after she died LOL. So funny. I just heard the BS rumor for the first time today! JC & Sexy Stany! BS might be the only one to rival Gable for star power during the Golden Age of cinema. Sentimental vote is for Gable, but, yeah, that likely would not have lasted long. The flame that burns hottest, dies the fastest, or so the old saying goes. I think with Steele she finally got it right. Successful man, but not in show biz. T
